We use two clays, both stoneware. My main clay is a fine grogged stoneware clay suitable for the handbuilding methods I use to make the pottery. Dave is increasingly using a white firing stoneware clay for the wheelwork. We fire both clays to around 1265 degrees C in electric kilns.
We make all our own glazes using raw materials. Many of these glazes are made with wood ash to get the surface effects that emulate pottery fired in a wood/oil fired kiln. The present batch of wood ash came from a field fire at a farm near us and should see us through the next 3 years or so !!!. We also use reactive slips with overglazes to the same end.
The log vases are made from rolled out clay. The side is formed around a bottle and a base added before removing the bottle.
The motifs are again rolled out before cutting out begins. Detail is added after cutting.Bowls, mugs and mushroom design jars are all wheel thrown.
